On Communication, Books in '21, Amazon Rules X'mas

Hello!

❄️ It's winter.
🎁 It's the holiday season.
πŸ—“ It's the end of the year.

How are you wintering in 2021?
Whose gifts do you still need to find?
Are you the resolution or reflections kind of person?

One thing I want to thank you- Thank you for signing up to my newsletter. πŸ™‡πŸ»

Now, onto this week's one thought on leadership and fun finds!

A Few Things Worth Sharing:

  1. In 2021 I read 26 books, including a book about James Bond and the Beatles, a rant on the art of comics, and more. I reviewed each of them in 3 sentences or less.
  2. I ordered two Christmas gifts: One from Amazon and the other one from a small brand in Australia.

I received the Amazon shipment in 4 days.

The Australian company had to refund me because they and DHL couldn't track the shipment.

I found out what Amazon did to destroy its competitors during the massive supply chain crunch.

  3. This app helps you build your website using real pen and paper. It's the easiest way to start a website. Confused? Let me explain.

A. Pick up your pen
B. Write onto a piece of paper whatever you want to put onto a webpage
C. Open up this app, scan the piece of paper
D. Count to 3 and it will create a webpage for you

It's quite magical and romantic.

On Leading:

"Communicationβ€œ ”Strategyβ€œ

The number 1 thing I think most bosses struggle to do well is not being a good leader. It's they don't plan their communication well enough to allow them to be the good leader they already are.

In other words, you are already a good leader, but you just suck at managing your time to allow your goodness to shine.

Alright, let's be more precise.

A big part of good leadership is appropriate communication with the appropriate people at the appropriate time.

So many bosses I've talked to have very considered plans around product development, strategies, fund raising, etc. But most of them seldom invested the same amount of vigor into devising their communication plans with direct reports and the broader team.

You see, most of you bosses are fantastic at planning and prioritising. You are already great at it because you have been challenged, quarterly, weekly, daily, to analyze, organise, and decide. You already posses the skills to plan. Therefore the only thing you need to do is to DECIDE to strategize your internal communications.

Here is a method you may use to evaluate the "health" of your internal communication plan. This method is stupidly simple because this is not rocket science.

Method A:

  1. Who are you talking to the most, say, in a week?
  2. Who should you be talking to the most in a week?
  3. Do the names from 1 and 2 match?

If Yes β†’ 🀝, and move onto Method A.1.

If Not ‡

  1. Why? Be honest! No one is listening so it's okay to admit to yourself you don't like the guy. It's okay
  2. Re-balance your face time among them rationally
  3. Script how you explain this change to these folks
  4. Begin this revised "communication" "strategy" next week

Method A.1:

  1. Who are the people you need to talk to but you don't enjoy talking to?
  2. Who are the people you don't really need to talk to but you spend a lot of time talking to?
  3. Re-balance your face time among them rationally
  4. Script how you explain this change to these folks
  5. Begin this revised "communication" "strategy" next week

And finally, let me be generous and share with you the most important πŸ”‘ key, the ultimate πŸ”¨ hack, the 🌌 cosmic secret, to this method ....

Just apply it diligently and please share with me your experience!
