Storm from Hell, Leading Yourself, Samurai Laser Swords

Storm from Hell, Leading Yourself, Samurai Laser Swords

1x FACT:

Hurricane Ida is a storm straight from hell. Its storm surge was so strong that it temporarily reversed the flow of the Mississippi River.

For the first time in history, Hurricane Ida became the first storm that went from non-existent to a near-Category-5 landfall in 72 hrs.

"We knew this was going to happen. We know that climate change is making storms like this happen more often. Still, Ida was shocking — the sixth tropical storm or hurricane to hit Louisiana in little more than a year."

1x LEADERSHIP THOUGHT:

In team sports, in order to excel, you need to answer the two distinct shades of the why- why does your position deserve to exist and why are you in your position?

Why does your position deserve to exist?

Are you a forward and do you fully understand that your team needs to you peck at the defence line to opportune goals?

Or are you the goalie, and your purpose is to try to not lose focus and be present during one of the 13th times where the opposite forwards kick the ball at you?

Why are you in your position?

Are you a forward because your coach asked you to?
Are you a goalie because you like to use your hands to play football?
Are you playing football because you want to win? Or just to stay fit?
Or is playing football on Friday nights your version of a bro's night out?

Your answers to these two sides of the why affect your performance and enjoyment of the game.

If you know your position well, obviously you would like perform better.

If your personal why is to, say, win as a team, you will likely become someone who is effective in empowering your teammates, in addition to performing well in your position.

It's the same at work.

You need to know both sides of your why at work - why does your role deserve to exist and why are you in your role?

Importantly, your ability to answer the question "why are you in your role" takes self leadership, because only you can fully answer this question.

You need to lead yourself to uncover your honest and candid truths and desires- Am I a boss because of the title, or am I a boss because people are inspired by my stories?

You need to lead yourself towards directions that echo your life purposes - Am I a boss because I want to maximise my RSUs, or am I a boss because I want to create more future bosses?

You need to lead yourself to behave according to your values - Am I listening because I believe in the value of all voices or am I listening because I believe in the perception of being a good listener?

Self leadership, essentially, is the journey of progressing from self awareness to self knowledge to self actualisation ...
